LES BELGES

If you were to ask a Belgian what we are most proud of, you’d quickly end up at the frituren. They are deeply rooted in our food culture and form an essential part of the streetscape. You can hardly walk down a street without coming across one. They are found all over the country, and everyone has their favorite. For almost every Belgian, visiting the frituur is a weekly ritual.

And yet, some still choose to spend their money on an inferior meal from fast food chains. Gigantic companies that certainly don’t need the extra profit. Found in spaces of discomfort and uniformity, where each location has the same standardized look, without any sense of character. The charm of the local frituur is exchanged for efficiency and impersonality, where the experience is secondary to convenience. What was once a social and culinary tradition has often become a cold transaction.

That’s why I chose to create a realistic anti-commercial series. The photos show people during their meals or simply looking directly at the camera. The gloom reveals the truth.
